According to the second-annual Gallup-Palmer survey of American attitudes about chiropractic care, Adult Americans are more likely to describe chiropractic care as “very safe” and “very effective” compared to pain medications or back surgery.

The results of the report are based on a panel study of 7,645 adults in the U.S., ages 18 and older, conducted online and via email from Feb. 8 to March 11. The margin of sampling error for the study is plus/minus 1.8 percentage points.

Other highlights of the survey include:

  • Twenty five percent of U.S. adults (nearly 62 million) went to a chiropractor in the last five years. More than half (35.5 million) said they went in the last 12 months—up slightly from the 33.6 million last year.
  • Seventy-seven percent of those who saw a chiropractor in the last year described chiropractic care as “very effective.”
  • Eighty-eight percent of recent chiropractic patients agreed that chiropractic care is a good value for the money they paid.
