Did you know that falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries, with those occurring in the home considered as one of the leading causes of injury-related death in the United States?

As common as it is, preventing falls could be as simple as getting rid of or addressing any tripping hazards that may be lurking in your house like:

  1. Cords. Keep electrical and phone wires away from walkways.
  2. Rugs. Taping down rugs will prevent them from rolling up and becoming a tripping hazard.
  3. Cabinet and drawers. Keep them closed when not in use.
  4. Spills. Clean up any spills immediately, placing warning signs if needed.
  5. Limited visibility. Inadequate lighting or carrying large loads can obstruct your vision and your ability to identify hazards in front of you.

Bathroom Falls

Of all the rooms in your home, the bathroom is one of the most dangerous. If fact, according to the CDC there are about 235,000 people each year who visit the emergency room because of a bathroom-related injury.

Here are some tips to keep your loved ones safe:

  1. Use non-slip mats inside and outside the bath tub.
  2. Clean up any wet areas as soon as possible.
  3. Install grab bars near the toilet, shower and tub.
  4. Keep soap and other bath products higher up to avoid bending.
  5. Place emergency phone numbers close by. They should be easily readable from a distance.

Your Health Matters

Your muscle condition, the medications you take, and certain conditions affect your risk for falling. Be sure to have your vision and hearing checked regularly. If you are taking medications, talk to your doctor about any side effects that increases your risk for falling. Also, staying active will help maintain your strength and balance to improve your chances to avoiding falls.
